China's Tropical Riviera · Global Beach Destinations

Set on Hainan's southern coast, Sanya brings tropical scenery into China's luxury travel landscape. Long beaches, warm seas and resort enclaves create a destination where island leisure meets the scale and energy of a rapidly evolving domestic market.

The place

Sanya lies at the southern end of Hainan, an island province roughly the size of Belgium, across a narrow strait from the Chinese mainland. It sits at around eighteen degrees north, the same latitude as Jamaica, and is the only part of China with a true tropical climate. The city grew quickly from a fishing port into the country’s leading beach destination, with an international airport and its own high-speed rail link.

The coast is a sequence of separate bays, each with its own character. Sanya Bay faces the city; Dadonghai is the older town beach; Yalong Bay, to the east, has long white sand and the earliest international resorts; Haitang Bay, further north, holds newer resorts and a vast duty-free complex. Inland, rainforest parks and the Li and Miao villages show another Hainan.

When to go

The best months are November to April, the dry season, when days are warm and sunny and the sea is calm. This is also high season for domestic travel: the weeks around Chinese New Year, in January or February, are the busiest of the year, and resorts fill well in advance. The October Golden Week holiday brings a similar peak.

From May to October the weather turns hotter and more humid, with frequent afternoon showers. Typhoons are possible from late summer into autumn, most often between August and October. Outside the national holidays, March, April and November usually offer the best balance of dry weather, availability and quiet beaches, with the sea still warm enough for swimming.

Where LVXVRY stays

Yalong Bay remains the established resort coast. The Ritz-Carlton Sanya, Yalong Bay sits in tropical gardens on the bay’s central beach, and The St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort occupies its eastern end. Further west, Park Hyatt Sanya Sunny Bay Resort stands on the quieter bay of the same name, between the mountains and the sea.

LVXVRY books The Ritz-Carlton and The St. Regis through Marriott STARS & Luminous and Park Hyatt through Hyatt Privé — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges each programme attaches to the stay. For the Chinese New Year period and the October Golden Week, reservations are best made several months ahead, as the resorts fill early with domestic travellers.
