The capital of the Emirates, set on an island off the Gulf coast, where a cultural district, white-sand islands and desert horizons share one calm skyline.
Abu Dhabi offers a more measured form of coastal luxury. Its beaches, islands and cultural institutions create a calm rhythm where desert light, contemporary architecture and Emirati identity shape a destination of understated confidence.
Abu Dhabi expresses power with greater calm. Cultural institutions, island developments, mosques, beaches and desert horizons create a city where national identity and contemporary architecture meet in measured grandeur.
Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven emirates and the seat of the federal government. The city stands on an island linked to the mainland by bridges, with the Corniche running along its western shore. Qasr Al Hosn, the eighteenth-century fort at its centre, recalls the settlement that preceded the oil era; the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, in white marble and inlaid stone, dominates the approach from the mainland.
Around the main island lie newer districts with distinct roles. Saadiyat Island holds the Louvre Abu Dhabi beneath its perforated dome, with further museums of its cultural district alongside, and a long natural beach where turtles nest. Yas Island gathers the Formula One circuit and theme parks; Al Maryah Island is the financial centre. Beyond the city, the Empty Quarter dunes reach Liwa.
As elsewhere on the Gulf, the comfortable season runs from late October to April, with warm days, cool evenings and calm sea. Winter is the time for the beaches of Saadiyat, desert excursions and the city’s cultural season, including the art fair Abu Dhabi Art in November and a growing programme of concerts and exhibitions.
The Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix closes the racing calendar at Yas Marina each year in late November or early December, when demand for hotels across the city peaks. Summer, from June to September, is very hot and humid; visitors keep to museums, spas and pools, and rates fall accordingly.
Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental remains the city’s landmark, a domed palace on its own beach at the end of the Corniche. On Saadiyat, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas both face the island’s long beach, a short drive from the Louvre. Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island serves travellers who prefer the city centre.
LVXVRY books Emirates Palace through Mandarin Oriental Fan Club, The St. Regis through Marriott STARS & Luminous, Park Hyatt through Hyatt Privé and Four Seasons through Four Seasons Preferred Partner — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges each programme attaches to the stay. For the Grand Prix weekend, rooms are best reserved many months ahead.
