Krabi

Limestone Drama.

A province of the Andaman coast where limestone towers rise from mangroves and the sea, and the finest beaches can be reached only by boat.

Limestone Drama · Global Beach Destinations

Krabi is defined by its vertical landscape. Limestone cliffs, mangroves, hidden beaches and longtail boats create a coastal identity that feels more elemental than polished, giving the destination a powerful sense of tropical drama.

The place

Krabi lies on the mainland across Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, with its own international airport. Its landscape is karst: sheer limestone cliffs, caves and pinnacles left by an ancient reef, with mangrove forest along the rivers and estuaries. Krabi Town sits on the river inland, while the coast around Ao Nang and Klong Muang holds most of the hotels.

Railay, a peninsula cut off from the road by cliffs, is reached by longtail boat and is known for its beaches and its rock climbing. Offshore lie the Hong Islands, Poda and Chicken Island, and further out the Phi Phi archipelago and Koh Lanta. Inland, the Emerald Pool and the hot springs of Khlong Thom sit in lowland forest.

When to go

Krabi follows the same rhythm as the rest of the Andaman coast. November to April is the dry season, with calm, clear water ideal for island-hopping, snorkelling and kayaking among the cliffs. December and January are the busiest months; February to April are hotter, quieter and often the best time for sea conditions.

From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and swell, and some boat routes are reduced or suspended on rough days. The landscape is at its most lush, the beaches emptier and many resorts lower their rates, though the outer islands are best left for the dry months. Late October and early May often bring a mix of sunny days and passing showers, with fewer visitors on the water.

Where LVXVRY stays

Krabi’s luxury hotels are few and stand apart. Rayavadee occupies the tip of the Railay peninsula, its pavilions set in coconut groves between three beaches and reached by boat, with the cliffs of Phra Nang rising behind them. Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, faces the Andaman Sea on a quiet stretch of coast north of Ao Nang, with views across to the limestone islands of the bay.

LVXVRY books Phulay Bay through Marriott STARS & Luminous — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges the programme attaches to the stay. For Rayavadee, LVXVRY advises on the choice of pavilion and arranges the stay directly with the hotel, including the boat transfer to Railay and private longtail or speedboat days among the islands of the bay.
