Spain’s southern region of Moorish palaces, sherry towns and white villages — Seville, Granada and Córdoba inland, and the long Costa del Sol along the sea.
Andalusia is one of Europe's great cultural crossroads. Palaces, courtyards, white villages, flamenco, gardens and Islamic architectural memory give the region a layered identity shaped by centuries of exchange.
Andalusia is Spain at its most expressive: white villages on the sierras, sherry bodegas in Jerez, horse fairs and flamenco, olive groves to the horizon and the long coast between Cádiz and Málaga. Life moves to the rhythm of heat, siesta and late dinners, and the region rewards the traveller who stays long enough to slow down with it.
Andalusia stretches from the Portuguese border to Almería and from the Sierra Morena to the Strait of Gibraltar. Its eight provinces hold the great cities of al-Andalus: Córdoba, capital of the Umayyad caliphate, with its Mezquita; Granada, seat of the last Nasrid kingdom, with the Alhambra; and Seville, whose Alcázar and vast Gothic cathedral reflect the wealth it gathered as Spain’s port for the Americas.
Between the cities lies a varied countryside: the olive groves of Jaén, the vineyards and bodegas of the sherry triangle around Jerez, the white villages of the Sierra de Grazalema, Ronda on its gorge and the snows of the Sierra Nevada. The coast divides into the Atlantic Costa de la Luz, wide and windswept, and the Mediterranean Costa del Sol, where Marbella and Sotogrande are the most polished resorts.
Spring is the classic season. Semana Santa fills Seville and Málaga with processions in March or April, Seville’s Feria de Abril follows, and in May come Córdoba’s festival of patios and the horse fair of Jerez. Orange blossom scents the cities and the countryside is green. Autumn, from late September to November, is equally fine, with the grape harvest in Jerez and mild days ideal for touring between the cities.
July and August are fiercely hot inland, often above 40°C in Seville and Córdoba, and the life of the region moves to the coast and the beach clubs of Marbella. Winter is mild along the Costa del Sol and pleasant for the cities without the crowds; from roughly December to April there is skiing in the Sierra Nevada, less than an hour from the Alhambra.
In Seville, Hotel Alfonso XIII, a Luxury Collection Hotel, built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, remains the grand address, a short walk from the Alcázar. On the coast, Marbella Club Hotel and Puente Romano Beach Resort share Marbella’s Golden Mile; Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Benahavís stands in the hills between Marbella and Estepona, and Finca Cortesin keeps its own estate near Casares, towards Sotogrande.
LVXVRY books Hotel Alfonso XIII through Marriott STARS & Luminous and Anantara Villa Padierna Palace through Anantara Journeys — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges each programme attaches to the stay. For Marbella Club, Puente Romano and Finca Cortesin, LVXVRY advises on and arranges the stay directly, whether on the coast alone or combined with the cities inland.
