The last surviving wonder of the ancient world, on the plateau above the Nile at the edge of Cairo — now with the Grand Egyptian Museum at its foot.
Giza belongs to the visual memory of humanity. The pyramids and Sphinx stand not merely as archaeological wonders, but as symbols of ambition, eternity and the extraordinary engineering imagination of ancient Egypt.
The Giza plateau rises on the west bank of the Nile, at the edge of the Western Desert, just beyond the spreading city of Giza, part of greater Cairo. The three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure were built in the twenty-sixth century BC; the Great Pyramid of Khufu, for nearly four thousand years the tallest structure on earth, is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.
Below the plateau the Great Sphinx guards the valley temple of Khafre. The Grand Egyptian Museum, close to the pyramids, was built to bring together the treasures of Tutankhamun and much of Egypt’s ancient heritage. Saqqara, with the step pyramid of Djoser, and Dahshur, with the Bent and Red pyramids, lie a short drive south, and Islamic Cairo across the river.
October to April is the most comfortable season, with warm, dry days and cool mornings and evenings; the best light on the plateau comes early, when the site opens, and late in the afternoon. December and January are the coolest and busiest months, and spring can bring the khamsin, a hot, dust-laden wind from the desert, in March and April.
Summer, from June to September, is very hot, and visits are best kept to the first hours of the day. Ramadan, whose dates shift each year, changes the rhythm of Cairo, with quiet days and lively evenings. Whatever the season, a private Egyptologist makes the difference between seeing the plateau and understanding it.
Marriott Mena House, Cairo is the defining address at Giza: a former khedival hunting lodge set in gardens directly below the plateau, where many rooms look onto the Great Pyramid and where Churchill and Roosevelt met during the Cairo Conference of 1943. Closer to the Nile, Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence stands on the Giza bank, with the city’s museums and restaurants within easy reach.
LVXVRY books Four Seasons through Four Seasons Preferred Partner — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges the programme attaches to the stay. For Mena House, LVXVRY advises on and arranges the stay, and on combining the pyramids with Saqqara, Dahshur, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo, with a private Egyptologist throughout.
