Athens

Classical Origin.

A capital where the Parthenon still presides over the traffic, and twenty-five centuries of history lie within half an hour of the Athenian Riviera.

Classical Origin · Heritage Places

Athens carries the weight of ideas that shaped the Western world. The Acropolis, ancient agora and contemporary city life create a destination where philosophy, democracy, mythology and modern Greece remain in constant dialogue.

The place

Athens spreads across the Attic basin between Mount Parnitha, Mount Hymettus and the Saronic Gulf, with the Acropolis rising from its centre. Around the rock lie the oldest quarters: Plaka with its neoclassical houses and Byzantine churches, the island-like lanes of Anafiotika, Monastiraki and its flea market, and the Ancient Agora where Socrates taught. Syntagma Square and the Parliament mark the modern civic heart, and Kolonaki is the most elegant residential district.

The city’s museums are among the richest in Europe: the Acropolis Museum, built above excavated streets with views to the Parthenon; the National Archaeological Museum; the Benaki and the Museum of Cycladic Art. South of the centre, the coast runs through Glyfada and Vouliagmeni to Cape Sounion and its Temple of Poseidon, giving Athens something few capitals have — a riviera within easy reach of its ancient heart.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for Athens. From April to early June the hills are green and temperatures are comfortable for walking the archaeological sites; Greek Easter, following the Orthodox calendar, brings candlelit processions on its Saturday night. September and October remain warm enough to swim along the Athenian Riviera, with lighter crowds on the Acropolis and long evenings on the rooftop terraces of the centre.

July and August are hot, frequently above 35°C, and the sites are best visited at opening time. Summer is also the season of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, with performances in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus beneath the Acropolis and ancient drama in the theatre at Epidaurus. Winter is mild and often sunny, a good season for museums, though some coastal venues close until spring.

Where LVXVRY stays

On Syntagma Square, facing the Parliament, stand the two classic addresses: Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel, a hotel since 1874, and its neighbour King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, both with rooftop views of the Acropolis. On the Vouliagmeni peninsula, Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens occupies a pine-covered headland on the sea, combining a resort setting with easy access to the city.

LVXVRY books Hotel Grande Bretagne and King George through Marriott STARS & Luminous and Four Seasons Astir Palace through Four Seasons Preferred Partner — at the official hotel rate, with the privileges each programme attaches to the stay. A visit often divides naturally between the two: the city first, then a few days on the coast.
