Hotel Missoni opened its first house in Edinburgh in June 2009 with 136 rooms and suites, three and a half years after Missoni and Rezidor agreed to create a global lifestyle hotel brand. Kuwait followed in 2011 with 169 rooms. The expansion stopped there: Missoni and Rezidor mutually terminated the worldwide licence in 2014, and both hotels left the brand by 30 June. In August 2026 there is no operating Missoni-branded hotel; the name has returned to hospitality through Resort Club collaborations rather than a revived hotel chain.
The brand
Hotel Missoni was a licensing partnership rather than a hotel company owned and managed by the fashion house. Rezidor supplied development, operations, distribution and hotel systems, while Missoni supplied the identity; Rosita Missoni served as creative director. Edinburgh was conceived as the prototype and Kuwait as the second international proof point, but ambitions for a much larger network never became operating scale.
After the 2014 exit, Missoni moved its built-environment activity toward Missoni Home, branded residences and hospitality collaborations. The official Resort Club programme now presents projects including Mykonos, Ibiza, Bali and the Maldives, while Missoni Real Estate lists multiple residential developments. These are not Missoni Hotels: host properties retain their brands and operations, while Missoni shapes selected spaces, furnishings and retail capsules. Ownership also changed in May 2026, when the Missoni family exited equity and FSI became the 73% shareholder, with Katjes Quiet Luxury holding 27%.
Philosophy
The original hotel idea was unusually domestic for a fashion collaboration. Rosita Missoni brought Missoni Home textiles, black-and-white grounds broken by saturated colour, furniture by designers she personally admired, Italian food culture and even the idea of the kitchen as the centre of family life into the hotel. Rezidor wrapped that personal environment in a full-service operating system, including an inclusive room-rate concept in Edinburgh and Kuwait.
The current Resort Club strategy keeps the visual half and removes the operating half. At One&Only Reethi Rah, OKU Ibiza and Cali Mykonos, Missoni changes beaches, pools, cabanas, umbrellas, cushions and pop-up retail while the hotel remains One&Only, OKU or Cali. The philosophy has therefore shifted from “stay in a Missoni hotel” to “enter a Missoni-designed moment inside someone else’s resort.”
What distinguishes it
Colour before neutrality. Hotel Missoni was launched against the wave of grey, brown and black minimalist design. Bold pattern and colour were not accessories but the identifying system.
Rosita made it personal. Edinburgh used furniture Rosita herself admired and drew on Italian family and food culture, making the first hotel closer to an inhabited Missoni Home universe than a generic fashion licence.
The chain actually ended. Unlike most brands in this volume, the key strategic fact is discontinuity: two hotels opened, the worldwide licence ended in 2014 and zero Missoni-branded hotels operate today.
Resort Club replaces rooms. The current hospitality footprint is modular: Missoni can transform a beach, pool or leisure zone without owning or managing the guest rooms around it.
Real estate carries scale. Multiple Interiors by Missoni and branded-residence projects show that residential development, rather than hotels, has become the more scalable long-term expression of the house’s interior language.
Missoni Hotels is not currently a bookable choice for a traveller who wants a consistent branded stay, a loyalty network or one operator accountable for the full guest journey: there are no operating Missoni-branded hotels in August 2026. Current Resort Clubs are partial and often seasonal environments inside independently operated hotels, so a guest may experience Missoni pool, beach or furnishings while the room remains governed by another brand. Historically, the concept was also a poor fit for travellers who prefer restrained, nearly anonymous interiors; colour and pattern were the product, not background decoration.
