Karl Lagerfeld signed the agreement for his first fully designed hotel in Macau in 2014, seven years before THE KARL LAGERFELD began operating in 2021. The project survived both a long construction cycle and the designer’s death in 2019 because its interiors and furniture had been developed with him directly. SJM held a grand opening celebration in June 2023. As of August 2026, it remains the only operating hotel under the name, making the hospitality business a design-led lifestyle extension rather than a conventional chain.
The brand
Karl Lagerfeld Hotels & Resorts sits inside the wider KARL LAGERFELD lifestyle system rather than behind a dedicated hotel operator. The fashion house supplies the name, design codes and creative framework; local partners develop and operate the properties. G-III Apparel Group became sole owner of the global brand in 2022. The Macau hotel is operated within SJM Resorts’ Grand Lisboa Palace Resort.
The operating portfolio is one 271-room-and-suite tower in Macau. The wider built-environment platform also includes five villas in Marbella, 51 villas in Dubai and branded residences in Lisbon. The expansion logic is therefore licensed places to stay or live in, not a centrally managed hotel pipeline. For a traveller, there is currently only one hotel experience to compare.
Philosophy
The hospitality idea is autobiographical. Lagerfeld treated interiors, furniture, photography, books and architecture as part of the same creative practice as fashion, and the hotel uses those interests as its design language. In Macau, European Art Deco and monochrome rock-chic references mix with moon gates, Chinoiserie and porcelain, adapting his personal visual world to the destination.
That authorship creates a constraint. Karl Lagerfeld hospitality must evolve after its founder’s death without presenting new work as personally designed by him. G-III and the Maison extend recurring codes — Paris, books, monochrome contrast and graphic precision — into licensed projects, while Macau remains the clearest built work directly conceived by Lagerfeld.
What distinguishes it
One author, one tower. Macau is not a hotel with a designer suite or a fashion collaboration layered onto a standard interior. SJM describes it as the world’s only hotel tower whose interior was entirely designed by Karl Lagerfeld, with features, patterns and materials in the guestrooms personally conceived or selected by him.
China changes the language. The hotel does not reproduce a Paris apartment in Macau. Lagerfeld combined Western Art Deco with moon gates, Chinoiserie, Chinese porcelain and local East-West references, making the cultural hybrid part of the design premise rather than an accessory.
The library is biography. The Book Lounge is modelled on Lagerfeld’s own study and uses thousands of books as an architectural feature. It turns one of his best-known private obsessions into a public hospitality space instead of relying only on logos or fashion imagery.
Posthumous, yet authored. The hotel opened after Lagerfeld’s death, but the project agreement dates to 2014 and the interior was developed with him. That separates Macau from later brand extensions that interpret his archive without his direct design involvement.
Residences before scale. After one hotel, the Maison moved more aggressively into villas and residences in Marbella, Dubai and Lisbon. The growth path is therefore branded living and architecture first, hotel network second.
THE KARL LAGERFELD is the wrong choice for a traveller seeking quiet anonymity, a stand-alone boutique hotel, a low-key local aesthetic or a multi-destination loyalty network. It sits inside a large Cotai integrated resort and asks the guest to engage with a specific designer universe: dark tailoring, graphic contrast, Chinoiserie, books and recognisable Karl references. Travellers who want the hotel to recede behind Macau, or who want geographic consistency, may prefer another brand; there is still only one operating hotel.
