Baccarat Hotels & Residences opened in New York in March 2015, translating a French crystal house founded in 1764 into a 114-room-and-suite hotel across from the Museum of Modern Art. Starwood Capital conceived the hotel brand and secured the global Baccarat hospitality licence. More than a decade later, New York remains the only operating Baccarat hotel, while a large pipeline waits behind it.

The brand

Baccarat Hotels is owned and managed by Starwood Hotels, formerly SH Hotels & Resorts and affiliated with Starwood Capital Group. Starwood provides management, development and commercial infrastructure; the Baccarat identity provides the name and decorative vocabulary. New York is the flagship, with 114 hotel rooms and suites plus a separate residential component of about 60 homes.

Starwood lists future projects in Rome, Florence, Dubai, Diriyah, Miami and the Maldives. Dubai was announced for 2026 but remains on the official “Coming Soon” list in August 2026; Rome and Florence are also still future hotels. The Maldives is scheduled for 2027. Until another house opens, Baccarat remains a single-market operating brand with an international pipeline.

Philosophy

The founding idea is to turn the qualities associated with Baccarat crystal — light, reflection, precision and ceremony — into a hospitality environment. New York does this through chandeliers, stemware, red accents and crystal objects, but also through Champagne, afternoon tea, floristry and salon culture: celebration becomes part of daily operation.

Starwood supplies the operating discipline. Baccarat is not run as a museum to an eighteenth-century manufacturer but as a contemporary hotel brand with large rooms, high suite ratios, spas, pools and strong food-and-beverage spaces. Future houses are intended to adapt the crystal vocabulary to local architecture rather than copy New York room by room.

What distinguishes it

Crystal becomes architecture. The source material is not fashion, food or a designer biography but a manufactured object. Light, facets, chandeliers, glassware and reflective surfaces become recurring spatial devices, giving Baccarat a material vocabulary that is unusually easy to recognise without relying on logos.

Celebration is routine. Champagne, crystal service and salon rituals are built into everyday hotel use. The brand turns the codes of formal entertaining into the normal rhythm of the lobby, bar and guestroom rather than reserving them for banquets.

One hotel, global pipeline. Most maison-originated brands expand cautiously because the concept is hard to reproduce. Baccarat is the reverse case: only New York is open, but Starwood has already assembled a broad cross-regional pipeline spanning Europe, the Middle East, Miami and the Maldives.

Management is separate. The hotel brand is a Starwood Hotels operating platform built around the Baccarat identity, not a hotel division managed directly by the crystal manufacturer. That distinction matters when comparing it with luxury groups that own and operate their hospitality businesses internally.

Residences are structural. Branded living was part of the New York project from launch and continues through Miami, Dubai, Diriyah and the Maldives. Residences are therefore not a late extension of the brand but one of its original commercial formats.

WHO BACCARAT HOTELS & RESIDENCES IS NOT FOR

Baccarat is wrong for travellers seeking quiet minimalism, low visual stimulation or a hotel that disappears behind its destination. The brand is built around shine, ceremony, decorative objects and a recognisable French luxury vocabulary. It is also a poor choice for travellers seeking network consistency: despite the pipeline, only New York operates as a Baccarat hotel in August 2026.
