To take a château is to take custody of a period. Painted ceilings, enfilades, orangeries, chapels, moats and avenues of lime were built for a way of living that no longer exists, and the pleasure lies in inhabiting them anyway — with heating that works, kitchens that function and beds that do not belong to the seventeenth century.
Each house is selected for the integrity of its restoration, the quality of its grounds and the honesty of its history. Many remain in the families that have held them for generations; some are let entirely, with the staff who keep them.
