Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer was created in 1863 by sovereign order of Prince Charles III, with François Blanc shaping its commercial model. Casino de Monte-Carlo and Hôtel de Paris became anchors of the new Monte-Carlo district. More than 160 years later, the company still operates much of the destination’s hospitality and entertainment infrastructure. Its hotel portfolio remains compact: four hotels across Monaco and neighbouring France.
The brand
Société des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Étrangers à Monaco is a Monegasque public company operating as Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, with the State of Monaco as majority shareholder. Unlike a conventional hotel group, SBM combines hotels with casinos, restaurants and bars, wellness, entertainment and real estate. Official materials describe four hotels, two casinos and more than thirty restaurants and bars inside one resort ecosystem.
The four hotels are Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and Monte-Carlo Beach. The first three are in Monaco; Monte-Carlo Beach is in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. The hotel footprint therefore covers two countries while remaining concentrated on one destination. Thermes Marins, Casino de Monte-Carlo, Café de Paris, Sporting Monte-Carlo, residences and One Monte-Carlo extend the relationship beyond the room.
Philosophy
The founding idea was larger than hotelkeeping. Charles III and François Blanc used gaming, hospitality, culture and urban development together to create an economic and social centre for the Principality. That destination-making logic still defines SBM: hotel, casino, spa, restaurants, shopping, events, beach and nightlife operate as parts of one Monte-Carlo experience.
Consistency depends on continuity across institutions rather than one visual template. Hôtel de Paris remains a Belle Époque palace, Monte-Carlo Beach an intimate seasonal Riviera hotel and Monte-Carlo Bay a contemporary resort. Shared privileges and resort-wide services connect them. State-linked ownership also gives SBM a role beyond hotel management: long-term stewardship of a substantial part of Monaco’s tourism infrastructure.
What distinguishes it
Destination before chain. SBM does not spread one hotel concept across the world; it concentrates several hotel identities inside one destination and makes the surrounding resort ecosystem part of the product.
The company helped make Monte-Carlo. The group was created in 1863, and the district that became Monte-Carlo was developed around its casino, hotel and cultural institutions. Few hospitality companies are so directly tied to the creation of the destination they still operate.
Gaming remains structural. Casino de Monte-Carlo is not an adjacent attraction or licensed partner. Gaming, hotels, gastronomy and entertainment sit inside the same corporate system, creating an integrated luxury model that most hotel collections do not possess.
Cross-property access matters. Depending on the hotel, status and season, guests can move through shared privileges involving the casino, Thermes Marins, Monte-Carlo Beach Club, resort shuttles and other facilities. The value of one house is therefore partly created by access to the wider estate.
Ownership encourages permanence. With the State of Monaco as majority shareholder, SBM is tied to the Principality in a way that franchise-led hotel groups are not. Renovations and new developments are part of a long-term destination strategy rather than only portfolio expansion.
SBM is a weak fit for travellers who want broad global coverage, points optimisation across many countries or a repeatable chain experience. Its strength is concentration: four hotels sit inside the same Monte-Carlo ecosystem, and much of the value comes from casino, gastronomy, events, wellness and social life around them. Travellers who avoid gaming, prefer remote retreat-style privacy or want severe minimalism may find the proposition too social or institutionally rooted.
