Capella Hotels and Resorts was created by hotelier Horst Schulze after his Ritz-Carlton career, emerging from West Paces Hotel Group in the early 2000s and launching as a top-tier brand in 2005. Pontiac Land co-founded Capella Hotel Group in Asia in 2006 and acquired it fully in 2017, shifting the centre of gravity to Singapore. By August 2026 Capella operates ten hotels and resorts, after Macau joined in February and Kyoto opened in March 2026.
The brand
Capella Hotels and Resorts is the flagship ultra-luxury brand of Capella Hotel Group, the hospitality arm of Singapore-based Pontiac Land Group. The group also operates Patina Hotels & Resorts, but the brands are deliberately differentiated: Capella emphasises crafted luxury, heritage, personalised service and cultural immersion, while Patina is more contemporary and lifestyle-oriented. Capella Hotel Group supplies management, development, brand standards and commercial infrastructure for owner partners.
The current portfolio comprises Bangkok, Hainan, Hanoi, Kyoto, Macau, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Ubud. In July 2026 the group described ten Capella properties, with Kyoto the latest opening. Nanjing, Diriyah, Florence, Kenting and Shenzhen remain future destinations and are excluded until opening. Capella Residences supports selected markets, and the brand participates in GHA DISCOVERY.
Philosophy
Capella frames its philosophy around the craft of hospitality: tradition, discovery, individuality and an unexpected element should create a stay that belongs to its destination rather than a universal template. Culture is operating content, not decoration. Capella Culturists research neighbourhoods, craftspeople and local histories, then translate that knowledge into Capella Curates experiences.
The second organising idea is residential intimacy. The Living Room acts as the social and cultural heart of each property, while service is intuitive and personal rather than ceremonial. Auriga Spa provides a recognisable wellness thread, but architecture, gastronomy and storytelling remain local. Consistency comes through attention, craftsmanship and cultural stewardship more than visual repetition.
What distinguishes it
Culture is operational. Capella does not stop at locally inspired interiors. Culturists, workshops, neighbourhood access and Capella Curates make destination interpretation part of daily service.
Heritage and new-build architecture coexist. Shanghai occupies restored shikumen villas, Sydney reawakens a listed government building, Singapore grows from colonial bungalows, while Bangkok and Taipei are contemporary purpose-built hotels. The connective logic is stewardship rather than architectural sameness.
Small scale remains important. Even as the network grows, several properties are deliberately intimate: Capella Ubud is a tented retreat, Capella Hanoi has fewer than fifty rooms, and Capella Kyoto opened with 89 rooms. The brand rarely behaves like a conventional large luxury chain.
The Living Room is a brand device. Rather than relying on a standard executive lounge, Capella uses a residential-style shared space as the base for Culturists, workshops and informal encounters, reinforcing the idea of the hotel as a private home connected to its community.
Asia-Pacific is the proving ground. Capella has achieved global recognition while remaining heavily concentrated in Asia-Pacific. The next strategic test is whether the same cultural-intimacy model can travel successfully into the Middle East and Europe through Diriyah and Florence.
Capella is a weaker fit for travellers who want a very large global network, strong points optimisation, standardised rooms or obvious resort spectacle. The collection remains small and each house is intentionally different. Guests who prefer anonymous international environments may find the cultural programming too central, while travellers seeking extreme seclusion may find some urban Capella properties more socially connected than expected.
