Monaco
Prestige.
Two square kilometres between the Alps and the sea — and more prestige per street than anywhere else on the Mediterranean.
Few places concentrate so much influence within such a compact setting. Monaco combines royal heritage, grand hotels, Formula One, superyachts and cultural events into a destination whose reputation extends far beyond its dramatic coastline.
Monaco turns geography into theatre. Between the sea and the cliffs, its scale intensifies every impression: palace, harbour, casino, circuit and skyline combine to create Europe's most concentrated image of prestige.
Monaco is the second-smallest state in the world, a principality held by the Grimaldi family since the thirteenth century. It is built almost vertically: the old town on the Rock, Port Hercule below it, Monte-Carlo climbing the hillside opposite and the Larvotto beach along the eastern shore. Distances here are measured in lifts and staircases rather than in miles.
What sets it apart is density. A grand hotel, an opera house, a casino, a three-star dining room and a harbour full of yachts stand within a few minutes’ walk of one another — and the Principality keeps them with the care of a capital rather than a resort.
The calendar shapes Monaco more than the weather does. January brings the Monte-Carlo Rally; late spring the Formula One Grand Prix, when the streets become the circuit and rates rise with them; late September the Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule.
High summer belongs to the beach clubs and the open-air concerts of the Sporting. Autumn and winter are quieter and milder than most of Europe — the season of the Monte-Carlo Opera and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, and the easiest time to have the town to yourself.
Monaco’s defining addresses belong to the Société des Bains de Mer: Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo on Place du Casino, Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo above the port, Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort on the Larvotto peninsula, and Monte-Carlo Beach just across the border at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.
