Wanda Reign is the ultra-luxury flagship brand of Wanda Hotels & Resorts and one of the clearest attempts by a major Chinese hotel company to create a domestically rooted luxury identity at the top of a broad multi-brand system. Wanda Hotels & Resorts officially describes Reign as an ultra-luxury brand for luminaries and social elites, built around supremely personalised service and the promise to transcend expectations. The first Wanda Reign opened in Wuhan in April 2014. The current official brand atlas lists four Reign properties or destinations: Wanda Reign Chengdu, Wanda Reign Resort & Villas Sanya Haitang Bay, Wanda Reign Wuhan and Phoenix River Yixing.
The brand
Wanda Reign sits at the apex of a seven-brand architecture. Beneath it, Wanda Vista is positioned as luxury, Wanda Realm as premium/upper-upscale, Wanda Jin as premium select-service, Wanda Yi as high-end lifestyle, Wanda Moments as upper-midscale lifestyle and Wanda Yue as midscale lifestyle. This hierarchy is unusually explicit and allows Reign to remain a deliberately small flagship rather than being stretched across the entire Wanda network.
The parent company has changed materially over time. Wanda Hotels & Resorts traces its hotel activity to the first owned and managed Wanda hotel in Dalian in 1996, while Wanda Hotel Investment & Development was founded in 2007 and Wanda Hotels & Resorts was established in 2012. Current official materials describe the company as a subsidiary of Tongcheng Travel and as an integrated hotel management and asset-management platform covering design, construction and operational management. As of February 2026, the official site states that the wider system operates more than 270 hotels, has more than 400 properties in the pipeline and spans more than 300 cities.
Philosophy
The brand belief is "Proud to Be Here." Reign's official positioning emphasises highly personalised service for a socially prominent guest profile, but its identity also sits within Wanda Hotels & Resorts' broader corporate philosophy of being practical, innovative and rooted in China. The parent company explicitly states an ambition to promote Chinese culture, giving Reign a role beyond generic international luxury.
The luxury proposition is therefore not simply about higher room rates or more elaborate interiors. Reign functions as Wanda's prestige layer: a place where Chinese ownership, Chinese design capability and international luxury-hotel operating expectations are intended to meet. This is particularly significant because Wanda operates its own design institute and has historically integrated hotel design, construction and management within one platform.
What distinguishes it
It is the explicit ultra-luxury apex of a large Chinese hotel system. Wanda does not blur Reign with Vista or Realm; the hierarchy is clearly stated by the parent company.
The brand is intentionally scarce. The current official atlas lists only four Reign properties/destinations despite the parent system operating hundreds of hotels. Scarcity therefore supports the flagship role.
Chinese cultural positioning is structural. Wanda Hotels & Resorts explicitly describes itself as rooted in China and committed to promoting Chinese culture, rather than presenting Reign as a copy of a Western luxury chain.
Vertical integration is unusually important. The wider Wanda platform combines hotel design, construction and management, giving the luxury brand access to in-house development capabilities.
The product can move beyond city hotels. Sanya Haitang Bay introduces resort and villa hospitality, while Phoenix River Yixing broadens the brand toward destination-estate experience.
Wanda Reign is a weaker fit for travellers seeking a large international ultra-luxury network with dozens of familiar global destinations, or for guests who want the residential understatement of small independent houses. Its current official footprint is compact and overwhelmingly China-centred. The brand also carries a more formal prestige orientation than many contemporary lifestyle-luxury concepts. Wanda Reign works best for travellers who value high-touch service, substantial luxury infrastructure, modern Chinese hospitality, destination dining and the opportunity to experience the top tier of a major Chinese hotel system.
