Shilla Hotels & Resorts

Shilla Hotels & Resorts is one of South Korea's defining hospitality systems, built from a luxury flagship that became a national institution and later expanded into upper-upscale and premium business brands.

Shilla Hotels & Resorts is one of South Korea's defining hospitality systems, built from a luxury flagship that became a national institution and later expanded into upper-upscale and premium business brands. The Shilla Seoul opened in March 1979 following the vision of Samsung Group founder Byung-Chul Lee. The name deliberately references the ancient Shilla Dynasty, associated in Korea with a flourishing of culture and arts. Today Hotel Shilla operates a three-brand hotel architecture: The Shilla at the luxury apex, Shilla Monogram in upper-upscale hospitality, and Shilla Stay as a premium business brand. In 2026 the system is also becoming more international, with operating properties in Vietnam and China alongside its deep South Korean network.

The brand

The modern hotel business sits within Hotel Shilla Co., Ltd., a Samsung Group affiliate whose activities extend beyond hotels into duty free and other service businesses. The company's own corporate history describes The Shilla Seoul as the origin of the hotel identity and positions tradition plus innovation as the basis for long-term development.

The current architecture is unusually clear. The Shilla comprises two flagship properties — Seoul and Jeju. Shilla Monogram currently lists Gangneung, Danang and Xi'an, with Xi'an opening in February 2026. Shilla Stay currently lists 17 properties, including Shilla Stay Plus Ihotewoo and the international Shilla Stay Yancheng, which opened in April 2026. This creates a hospitality ladder from landmark luxury through upper-upscale destination hotels to a scalable premium business format.

Philosophy

The Shilla's luxury philosophy is expressed through "Authentic Indulgence" and a promise of genuine care and heartfelt hospitality. The flagship brand seeks to combine Korean aesthetics and service culture with contemporary international luxury rather than reproduce a Western grand-hotel model. At The Shilla Seoul, traditional Korean references coexist with modern architecture, high-level dining, urban leisure and formal service; at Jeju, the same service philosophy is translated into resort landscape and seasonal programming.

Across the wider system, the central principle is accessibility of Shilla service at different levels. Shilla Monogram extends the group's hospitality values into upper-upscale hotels and residences, while Shilla Stay explicitly describes itself as making the values of The Shilla more accessible through a premium business-hotel model.

What distinguishes it

The flagship has national prestige. The Shilla Seoul is one of South Korea's most recognised luxury hotels and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, giving the group an internationally legible luxury reference point.

Korean identity is structural. The Shilla name itself references the Shilla Dynasty, and the flagship's positioning combines Korean aesthetics, food and service with contemporary global luxury.

The three-brand ladder is disciplined. The Shilla, Shilla Monogram and Shilla Stay occupy distinct positions instead of forcing one name to stretch across every market tier.

International expansion is accelerating. Shilla Monogram Danang established the first overseas Monogram expression; Xi'an and Shilla Stay Yancheng added China in 2026.

Dining is a major luxury mechanism. The Shilla Seoul's restaurants — including La Yeon, Continental, Ariake and Palsun — are repeatedly highlighted in international dining recognition, making gastronomy a core part of flagship identity rather than a supporting amenity.

WHO SHILLA HOTELS & RESORTS IS NOT FOR

Shilla Hotels & Resorts as a parent system is a weaker fit for travellers seeking one identical luxury tier across every property. The portfolio intentionally spans flagship luxury, upper-upscale and premium business hospitality. Guests seeking the highest level should evaluate The Shilla Seoul and The Shilla Jeju rather than assume that Shilla Monogram or Shilla Stay deliver the same product intensity. The system is also still geographically concentrated in East Asia. Shilla works best for travellers who value Korean service culture, strong dining, major urban and resort addresses, a structured loyalty programme and the ability to move between different hospitality tiers within one coherent Korean platform.
