Palace Hotels of France

When only France's highest distinction will do.

Ideal for

Travelers seeking the highest official recognition in French luxury hospitality and the finest expression of French art de vivre.

Editorial description

France is one of the few countries in the world where the highest expression of hotel excellence is recognized by an official national distinction.

The Palace designation is reserved for exceptional hotels that go beyond the already demanding five-star classification. It recognizes not only comfort and service, but also heritage, architecture, gastronomy, cultural identity and the French art of living. The distinction is awarded by a national commission under Atout France and reviewed periodically; after the review of June 2026, thirty-three hotels hold it.

It is not a Parisian privilege. Thirteen Palaces stand in Paris, but seven are in the Alps — Courchevel above all, and now Megève — and nine on the Riviera and in Provence, from Cap d’Antibes and Cap-Ferrat to Saint-Tropez, Cannes and the hills of Gordes. Two sit among the vineyards and spas of the Southwest, one overlooks the vineyards of Champagne, and one lies across the Atlantic on Saint-Barthélemy.

A Palace hotel is not simply a luxury hotel. It is an institution. It represents a particular idea of France: elegance, discretion, history, craftsmanship, dining, service and a sense of place that cannot be separated from the destination itself — a winter Palace in Courchevel is as unmistakably French as a Palace on the Seine.

Within The Collection System, Palace Hotels of France form a category of official excellence. They are selected not because they belong to a brand, but because the individual property has received one of the most prestigious hotel distinctions in the world.
