Pendry Hotels & Resorts is the contemporary luxury lifestyle brand of Montage International, created to translate the parent company's service culture into a younger, more urban and socially energetic form. The first Pendry opened in San Diego in 2017, establishing a model built around sophisticated design, destination restaurants and bars, neighbourhood engagement and luxury service without excessive formality. Pendry is not positioned below Montage simply as a cheaper version of the parent brand. It is a distinct hospitality language: more metropolitan, more nightlife-aware, more fashion-conscious and more comfortable with the idea that the hotel itself can function as a social address for local residents as well as travellers.
The brand
Pendry sits within privately held Montage International, founded by Alan J. Fuerstman and developed with a strong emphasis on luxury service and destination resorts. Michael Fuerstman played a central role in creating Pendry as a new-generation brand capable of speaking to guests who wanted design and social energy without abandoning high-touch hospitality.
The portfolio has expanded from San Diego into Baltimore, West Hollywood, Chicago, Park City, Washington, D.C., Newport Beach and Tampa, combining city hotels with mountain and coastal resorts. Branded residences have become an important part of the growth model. The result is a brand that can move from an urban arts district to a ski destination or beachfront setting while retaining a recognisable combination of design, dining and social life.
Philosophy
Pendry's philosophy is often described through the meeting of old-world hospitality and contemporary culture. Service remains attentive and polished, reflecting Montage International's luxury heritage, but the atmosphere is intentionally less ceremonial. Guests should feel that the hotel understands the neighbourhood, the restaurants, nightlife, art, music and style of the destination.
Food and beverage are structural rather than supplementary. Pendry properties typically operate multiple restaurant and bar concepts, often designed to attract a local audience. This makes the lobby, rooftop, club, restaurant and bar part of the hotel's identity and commercial ecosystem. Private guest spaces can remain calm and refined while public areas carry stronger social energy.
What distinguishes it
Montage service DNA sits behind a lifestyle product. Pendry can offer contemporary design and social energy without abandoning the service discipline of a traditional luxury hotel company.
Restaurants and bars are core brand architecture. The hotel is intended to become a local social destination rather than an isolated accommodation product.
The brand crosses urban and resort formats. San Diego, West Hollywood and Washington coexist with Park City and Newport Beach without requiring a separate resort sub-brand.
Residential development is strategic. Pendry Residences extend the brand into luxury real estate and create mixed hotel-residential communities in several destinations.
The design language is contemporary but not identical. Each property is expected to respond to its architecture and neighbourhood, allowing Pendry to maintain consistency of attitude rather than replicate one interior template.
Pendry is a weaker fit for travellers seeking classical grand-hotel formality, palace architecture, extreme resort seclusion or a traditional points-driven global chain experience. Public spaces can be socially active, and restaurants, rooftops, bars and nightlife may be important parts of the hotel environment. Guests who prefer quiet heritage hotels with minimal local social traffic may favour another brand. Pendry works best for travellers who value design, dining, neighbourhood culture, nightlife, contemporary American luxury, ski or coastal lifestyle and high-touch service delivered without stiffness.
