Saxon Collection is centred on one of South Africa's most recognised independent luxury hotels: Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa in Sandhurst, Johannesburg. Set on ten acres of indigenous landscaped gardens close to Sandton, the Saxon combines the privacy of a residential estate with contemporary five-star service, African art and design, gastronomy, wellness and large-format villa accommodation. The hotel's history is unusually connected to modern South Africa: the property was once a private residence and became associated with Nelson Mandela during the period in which he worked on his autobiography after his release from prison. Today the Saxon operates as a highly concentrated luxury hospitality house rather than a conventional multi-hotel chain.
The brand
The current public-facing hospitality identity is Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, with the broader collection concept built around the Johannesburg hotel, its suites and three stand-alone luxury villas. The official hotel site also presents Shambala Private Game Reserve as a sister brand, creating a natural city-and-safari relationship without treating Shambala as another Saxon-branded hotel. For the Luxury Hospitality Library, Saxon Collection is therefore best understood as a single-core-property luxury house with multiple accommodation formats and a closely related safari sister brand.
The Saxon's physical structure supports this interpretation. Guests can stay in Luxury Suites, Presidential Suites and the Nelson Mandela Platinum Suite in the main hotel, choose Villa Luxury or Villa Presidential Suites, or reserve one of three stand-alone Saxon Luxury Villas in its entirety. The villas retain access to the services and facilities of the main hotel while providing a substantially more private residential environment.
Philosophy
The Saxon defines itself as an exclusive private retreat and repeatedly describes the hotel as a home for the duration of the guest's stay. Its values emphasise commitment, excellence, people, community and environmental responsibility. Service is therefore intended to combine the polish of a major luxury hotel with the warmth and privacy of a residential environment.
South African identity is embedded through art, materials, cuisine and community engagement. The Saxon is a patron of the creative arts and uses contemporary African design throughout the property. Its SOUL by Saxon amenities are locally sourced and ethically produced, while community partnerships connect the operating model with South African suppliers and social initiatives. The result is a luxury language that is international in service standards but deliberately local in cultural expression.
What distinguishes it
One hotel operates with the depth of a collection. Main-hotel suites, villa suites, three complete private villas, major dining, spa, events and curated Johannesburg experiences create several hospitality formats inside one estate.
Privacy is unusually strong for an urban hotel. Ten acres of indigenous gardens in Sandhurst create a secluded resort-like environment only a short distance from Sandton's commercial centre.
Modern South African history is part of the property's identity. The hotel's connection with Nelson Mandela gives the Saxon cultural provenance that cannot be replicated through design or branding alone; its largest signature accommodation is the Nelson Mandela Platinum Suite.
Art is structural. The hotel describes itself as a significant patron of the arts, and African creative work functions as part of the property's cultural identity rather than as generic decoration.
Wellness has substantial physical scale. The Saxon Spa is a 700-square-metre, two-level facility with eleven treatment rooms and a holistic approach incorporating hydro, hammam, sauna, sound and other sensory experiences.
Saxon Collection is a weaker fit for travellers seeking a broad international hotel network, many destinations under one brand, standardised resort formats or a proprietary global points-and-status ecosystem. Its defining strength is concentration: the Saxon is fundamentally a single landmark Johannesburg hospitality estate with several suite and villa formats. Guests whose priority is network breadth may prefer a global luxury operator. The Saxon works best for travellers who value privacy in Johannesburg, spacious accommodation, African art and design, serious spa and dining, residential service, modern South African history and the option to combine the city stay with a separately branded safari experience.

Editorial note — Code and book number follow LHL Register v50.0, which places Saxon Collection at LHL-056 / P1-04-15 in Volume IV — Local Ultra-Boutique & Private Collections. Current operating information was checked against official Saxon materials in August 2026. The official site presents Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa as the core hospitality property, with main-hotel suites, villa suites and three stand-alone Saxon Luxury Villas; it presents Shambala Private Game Reserve separately as a sister brand. The Saxon explicitly identifies participation in Leaders Club and association with The Leading Hotels of the World. Accordingly, this Master does not invent a multi-hotel Saxon operating count: Portfolio is recorded as one core hotel estate with multiple accommodation formats, and Loyalty as Third-party — Leaders Club / The Leading Hotels of the World.
