The Oberoi Group

The Oberoi Group began in Shimla in 1934, when Mohan Singh Oberoi acquired Clarkes Hotel after learning the hotel business from the ground up.

The Oberoi Group began in Shimla in 1934, when Mohan Singh Oberoi acquired Clarkes Hotel after learning the hotel business from the ground up. From that beginning emerged one of India's most influential hospitality companies and, within it, Oberoi Hotels & Resorts — a luxury name whose international reputation has been built less on scale than on intensely personalised service. The group later expanded into major Indian cities, palace-inspired resorts, wildlife lodges, Himalayan retreats, Indian Ocean resorts and Nile cruising, while also developing the five-star Trident brand. In 2026 the Oberoi name remains one of the clearest Indian contributions to global luxury hospitality.

The brand

The Oberoi Group is an Indian hospitality group whose principal hotel businesses operate under the luxury Oberoi Hotels & Resorts brand and the five-star Trident Hotels brand. EIH Limited is the flagship listed company of the group, while the Oberoi family remains closely associated with ownership, governance and operations. Vikram Oberoi serves as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer and represents the third generation of the founding family in operational leadership.

For the Luxury Hospitality Library, this article focuses primarily on the Oberoi luxury identity rather than treating Trident as equivalent product. The Oberoi portfolio includes landmark city hotels, palace-inspired resorts, wildlife resorts, beach resorts, Himalayan houses and luxury Nile cruisers. The wider Oberoi Group states that it operates 32 hotels, resorts and cruisers across its Oberoi and Trident brands. The luxury portfolio is concentrated in India with selected international properties in Egypt, Indonesia, Mauritius, Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

Philosophy

The operating philosophy is expressed with unusual directness: 'The guest is everything.' The Oberoi approach is built around making each guest feel seen, heard and understood as an individual. Warmth, anticipation, attention to detail and respect for time and privacy matter more than visible ceremony. This has given the brand a service identity that can remain recognisable across very different physical environments.

Training is central to the system. The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development, established in 1966, became one of the group's most important institutional assets and helped create a deep internal culture of hospitality management. The company's service reputation therefore depends not only on individual personalities but on recruitment, education, operational discipline and the expectation that employees will exercise judgement in the guest's interest.

What distinguishes it

Indian luxury without a single decorative formula. Oberoi can use Mughal references in Agra, Mewar palace language in Udaipur, Rajput architecture in Jaipur, Himalayan heritage in Shimla or contemporary urban design in Gurgaon without reducing Indian identity to one visual template.

Service is intensely personal. The strongest Oberoi stays are remembered for anticipation and individual recognition rather than for scripted ceremony. The brand's language of hospitality is warm, attentive and frequently low-profile.

Resorts are often destination-defining. Amarvilas faces the Taj Mahal; Udaivilas occupies a vast lakefront setting in Udaipur; Vanyavilas and Vindhyavilas connect luxury hospitality with Indian wildlife landscapes; Wildflower Hall interprets the Himalayas through a grand mountain retreat.

Family continuity matters. The Oberoi name has remained connected to successive generations of the founding family, giving the company a degree of cultural continuity that differs from most globally distributed corporate hotel brands.

Oberoi One creates a proprietary recognition ecosystem. The programme begins benefits from the first stay and develops through Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers, combining member rates, dining savings, flexible arrival and departure, upgrades and complimentary stays rather than relying on a conventional points currency.

WHO THE OBEROI GROUP IS NOT FOR

The Oberoi Group is a weaker fit for travellers who want a very large global network, a lifestyle-led social scene or a conventional points currency transferable across hundreds of hotels. Its international footprint remains selective and its strongest identity is still connected to India and the Indian Ocean region. Guests seeking radical design experimentation may find smaller contemporary brands more adventurous, while travellers whose priority is network breadth may prefer Four Seasons, Marriott or other large global systems. Oberoi works best for guests who value personal service, privacy, destination context, refined classical luxury and a strong sense of operational care.

Editorial note — Code and book number follow LHL Register v50.0, which places The Oberoi Group at LHL-034 / P1-03-05 in Volume III — Global Luxury Hospitality Houses. Current company information was checked against official Oberoi materials in August 2026. The Oberoi Group states that it operates 32 hotels, resorts and cruisers across the luxury Oberoi and five-star Trident brands. The official Oberoi destination directory separately lists the luxury portfolio, including hotels and resorts, two Nile cruisers, Naila Fort as an Oberoi Luxury Residence, The Oberoi Grand under restoration and The Oberoi Sukoonvilas, Wadi Safar as opening soon. Portfolio figures in this article therefore distinguish the wider group from the operating Oberoi luxury hotel/resort portfolio. Oberoi One is a proprietary tiered guest recognition and loyalty programme and is recorded accordingly. Register v50.0.
